God Save the Queen was the Anthem for Australia until replaced by Advance Australia Fair in 1984.
Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil;
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature’s gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history’s page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.
Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
We’ll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who’ve come across the seas
We’ve boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.
Peter Dodds McCormick’s Advance Australia Fair was officially declared Australia’s national anthem by the Governor-General on 19 April 1984, even though it was first performed in Sydney in 1878 and again in1901 at the inauguration of the Commonwealth of Australia.
Two polls were actually held to determine the new Anthem:
8th April 1974, an opinion poll held by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, sampling about 60,000 people with a choice of three anthems:
- 51.4% Advance Australia Fair
- 19.6% Banjo Paterson’s Waltzing Matilda
- ??.?% Linger’s Song of Australia.
This poll was used by the Government of the day to determine that Advance Australia Fair was to be Australia’s anthem, but with God Save The Queen reserved for when British royalty was present.
In 1976 the new government reinstated God Save the Queen as the ‘national anthem’.
21st May 1977, the National Song Poll (a National Plebiscite) was held with the results of the nations 6,769,259 voters being:
- 43.2% Advance Australia Fair 2,940,854
- 28.3% Waltzing Matilda 1,918,206
- 18.7% God Save the Queen 1,257,341
- 9.60% Song of Australia 652,858
After vote preferences were calculated, the final two options were:
- 65% Advance Australia Fair 4,415,642
- 35% Waltzing Matilda 2,353,617
This result finalised earlier disagreements over the 1974 much smaller sample poll.
The original Advance Australia Fair words were:
Verse One
Australia’s sons let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in Nature’s gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history’s page, let every stage
Advance Australia fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing,
“Advance Australia fair!”
Verse Two
When gallant Cook from Albion sail’d,
To trace wide oceans o’er,
True British courage bore him on,
Till he landed on our shore.
Then here he raised Old England’s flag,
The standard of the brave;
With all her faults we love her still,
“Brittannia rules the wave!”
In joyful strains then let us sing
“Advance Australia fair!”
Verse Three
While other nations of the globe
Behold us from afar,
We’ll rise to high renown and shine
Like our glorious southern star;
From England, Scotia, Erin’s Isle,
Who come our lot to share,
Let all combine with heart and hand
To advance Australia fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing
“Advance Australia fair!”
Verse Four
Shou’d foreign foe e’er sight our coast,
Or dare a foot to land,
We’ll rouse to arms like sires of yore
To guard our native strand;
Brittannia then shall surely know,
Beyond wide ocean’s roll,
Her sons in fair Australia’s land
Still keep a British soul.
In joyful strains the let us sing
“Advance Australia fair!”

A new Third Verse was added
Beneath our radiant southern Cross,
We’ll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who’ve come across the seas
We’ve boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing
“Advance Australia fair!”
A ‘missing’ verse, currently being used as part of the Anthem in some Christian schools, is:
With Christ our head and cornerstone,
We’ll build our Nation’s might,
Whose way and truth and light alone,
Can guide our path aright.
Our lives, a sacrifice of love,
Reflect our Master’s care
With faces turned to heaven above,
Advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia fair.
This verse appears to have no official recognition, and is so far unsubstantiated as being part of the original wording.
