BSB Numbers in Australia

The first 2 digits tell us which Bank it is.
The 3rd digit indicates the State that the branch is in.
The last 3 digits show the branch reference number.

First Two Digits (A few examples of common Banks in Australia)

  • 01 – ANZ Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited
  • 03 – Westpac Banking Corporation
  • 06 – CBA Commonwealth Bank of Australia
  • 08 – NAB National Australia Bank
  • 10 – BankSA
  • 11 – St George Bank
  • 12 – BoQ Bank of Queensland
  • 30 – BankWest
  • 34 – HSBC Bank Australia
  • 48 – Suncorp-Metway

3rd Digit Codes

  • 2 – Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales
  • 3 – Victoria
  • 4 – Queensland
  • 5 – South Australia and Northern Territory
  • 6 – Western Australia
  • 7 – Tasmania

Examples would be:

114-xxx = St George Bank, in Queensland
012-xxx = Commonwealth Bank, in Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales
123-xxx = Bank of Queensland, in Victoria…. (yes, apparently the Bank of Queensland has branches in Melbourne)
