Cyclones in South East Queensland


Compare, Select & Save on private health cover with iSelectWe have all heard of Cyclone Larry and Cyclone Yasi, both of which hit far North Queensland, but what about Cyclones in Brisbane and South East Queensland ?

1954
One of the worst Cyclones to hit South East Queensland was in February 1954, when the eye of a cyclone crossed the coast at Coolangatta, and parts of the the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast areas suffered widespread structural damage.  A report at bom.gov.au reports that 26 lives were lost in this event.

1974
In January 1974. Cyclone Wanda hit the coast at Maryborough, causing significant flooding in Brisbane. 13 people are reported to have died and over 6,000 homes flooded.

1994
In January 1994. Cyclone Rewa came close to Brisbane, but not getting closer than 100km from the coast. It did however cause severe flash flooding which, according to some reports, resulted in 4 deaths in the Brisbane area.
