NSW adopted daylight saving time in 1971.
A referendum on daylight savings was held in New South Wales on 1st May 1976, but only 31.58% voted against it.
Current Daylight Start and Finish dates in NSW are:
- Begins 4th Oct 2009 – Turn clock forward by 1 hour at 2am
- Ends 4th April 2010 – Turn clock back by 1 hour at 2am
- Begins 3rd Oct 2010 – Turn clock forward by 1 hour at 2am
- Ends 3rd April 2011 – Turn clock back by 1 hour at 2am

Looking at those two locations, the Sydney Sunrise times WITH Daylight saving is the same as Cairns, WITHOUT daylight saving time.
