Getting a Driving Licence in Queensland

  • Learner licence
  • P1 provisional licence
  • P2 provisional licence
  • Open licence (Full Licence)

Learner licence

To get a learner licence in Queensland, you must:

Be at least 16 years of age.
Complete the Driver Licence Application form F3000.
Prove evidence of identity and Queensland residency.
Pass an eyesight test.
Take and pass the Road Rules Test.
Pay the required learner licence fee.

The Road Rules Test

The road rules test is a random selection of 10 give way, and 20 road rules, questions that you must pass before being able to get a learners licence.

The Road Rules Test Fee

The road rules computerised test fee, in Queensland, is $19.85 as at July 2011.

The Learner Driving Licence Fee

The 3 year Queensland learner licence fee, at 1st July 2011, is $115.80.  This is estimated to rise to $148.35 by 2014-2015.

The Practical Driving Test

The practical driving test is taken with a qualified examiner, who decides on your ability to pass the test or not, based on your driving skills during this test.  The test normally consists of about 35 minutes driving time.

Practical Driving Test Fee

The practical driving test will cost $46.55 as at 1st July 2011.

P1 Provisional Licence

After passing the practical driving test, you will be eligible to progress to either a P1 or P2 type Provisional licence.

The P1 stage applies to provisional licence holders who obtained a provisional licence while they were under 25 years of age.
This P1 licence must be held for a minimum of 1 year, whilst driving with RED P Plates on the car.
To progress from the P1 licence you must pass the hazard perception test.

Hazard perception test

The hazard perception test is an online computer-based test which measures a driver’s ability to anticipate and appropriately respond to potentially dangerous situations while driving.
This computer based video reaction test is taken by all P1 provisional licence holders before moving up to a P2 provisional or open licence (dependent on age).

The Queensland Hazard Perception Test fee, at  July 2011 is $16.45

P2 Provisional Licence

The P2 stage applies to provisional licence holders who were 25 years of age or older when they passed the practical driving test, or were issued a P1 type provisional licence while 24 years of age or under, and who have completed the P1 stage, and passed the hazard perception test.

Open (Full) Licence

After completing the relevant Provisional Licence stages, a driver will progress to a full Open Licence, which can be valid for between 1 and 5 years.

It must be noted that an open licence issued for someone who passed a driving test in an automatic vehicle will be limited to only driving an automatic vehicle.  A new test would be required to be able to drive a manual car.
