I was checking the ink cartridge cost per sheet for 16 Printers today, and saw a really big difference in the ink costs, based on quoted page yield, and the cost of original cartridges at a local shop.
The HP Officejet Pro 8500 came out best with the following cost per 100 pages.
$2.41 HP940XL Black
$2.71 HP940XL Cyan
$2.71 HP940XL Magenta
$2.71 HP940XL Yellow
This printer is however, not one of the cheaper ones. The HP website quotes A$499 as the RRP, but it is available for between $327 and $377 locally.
As a comparison, the most expensive of the 16 printers was another HP, the Deskjet D2050, with costs per 100 pages of:
$12.11 HP61 Black
$16.36 HP61 Colour
The brands I checked were from the four major manufacturers, Brother, Canon, HP and Epson.
These were the Printers, together with the cost of printing 100 pages. (25 of each colour for the 4 cartridge models, and 50 of each with the 2 colour cartridges)
