In a submission to the Federal Parliament’s Committee on Multicultural Affairs, the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils has asked for a change in Australian law to allow Muslims to be able to marry, divorce and conduct financial transactions under the principles of sharia law.

It argues that all Australians would benefit if Islamic laws were adopted as mainstream legislation.

The federal government however, has quickly moved to block any calls for sharia law in Australia.

Attorney-General Robert McClelland: “There is no place for sharia law in Australian society and the government strongly rejects any proposal for its introduction”

But if we look at the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils website, we see this:

Mr Ikebal Patel, President of Muslims Australia (AFIC), today reminded Australians that the Quran clearly teaches us to embrace the laws of the country in which we live. Thus, in order to be a pious, devout Muslims, we must respect and abide by the laws of this great country.

Which is it ?

1: Respect and abide by the laws of the country you live in, or

2: Change the laws to suit yourself

I do have one question…

If I go and live in a Muslim country, will I be allowed to use Australian law for myself  ?

When that happens, then I see no problem with Australia doing the same.
