The Cost of Running an Air Conditioner

Compare, Select & Save on private health cover with iSelectBeing a cost conscious person, I often wonder how much the actual running costs are of the average Household Air Conditioner.

We had ours on today, as it has been a particularly hot day, and I took the meter reading just after I turned it on.

From 11:30am to 4:30pm the air con unit ran for 5 hours, and my total power consumption for that 5 hours was 13kw, or an average of 2.6kw per hour.

My normal hourly power consumption during those hours is between 0.94 and 1.2 and has averaged 1.04 for the last 10 days.

Consequently, I can reasonably calculate that my air con unit is costing me 1.6 kw of power each hour, or about 35 cents per hour, at the current cost of $0.21351 per kWh.

This is for a Carrier 42P250H, set at 24°C on cooling mode, cooling about a 50 sq metre area. This is the 2.5hp or 6kw (cooling cycle) model.

If we were to run this for 10 hours per day, every day, the annual electricity cost would be about $1,300 !
