I’ve just been reading about the Baking Associations of Australia saying that some of its independent bakers are hurting due to the competition from the $1 home-brand bread being supplied by the Coles and Woolworths supermarkets.
Some of these Bakers are apparently considering reducing staff, and maybe dropping Bread sales themselves.
Personally I wonder about the accuracy of this, and whether they really are being hurt by bread being sold for just $1.
Have you compared these $1 loaves against a Bakers loaf ?
Even Coles and Woolworths admit that in their total bread sales, only about 5% to 8% is made up of these cheap loaves. The remaining 80+% is at their normal higher prices, for their higher quality bread.
I can’t really see people dropping down from the Freshly made Bakery bread to only buy the $1.00 mass produced bread, especially when you consider that these loaves have only come down from about $1.20 anyway.
I had the misfortune to buy a couple of these home brand loaves for $1 each during the last few days, and never again, at least not from those two supermarkets.
Actually I normally buy my white sliced sandwich bread from the Butchers, the Fruit and Vegetable shop or from ALDI. Each of these also sells bread for $1, but at much better quality.
ALDI sells the Bakers Life brand for $0.99
My Butcher sells the Buttercup brand $0.99
My Fruit shop sells a TipTop brand for $1.40
Woolworths sell their Homebrand Bread – White Sandwich 700g for $1.00
Coles sell their Coles Smart Buy White Bread 700g for $1.00
If you have tasted any of these, what is your opinion of them ?
My score rating out of 5, with the best of the bunch getting 5, is:
- 5 ALDI
- 4 Butchers – Buttercup
- 3 Fruit Shop – Gold Max
- 1 Coles
- 1 Woolworths
This is only rating these $1.00 loaves. The $3.50 loaves may well be a different category.
