The Founding of New South Wales.
The Colony of New South Wales was established in 1788 as a penal colony for Britain.
Captain James Cook first named the land “New Wales”, after Wales in the UK. This was re-worded to “New South Wales” in documents for the Admiralty.
In 1825, a disconnected Southern part of New South Wales was given up to create Tasmania.
In 1828, the NSW boundary was moved to the West and that western part became Western Australia.
In 1836, a South Western part of New South Wales was given up to create South Australia.
In 1841, the part of New South Wales now known as New Zealand, became a separate Colony of New Zealand on the 1st July. (Later to become an independent country)
In 1851, a South Eastern part of New South Wales was given up to create Victoria.
In 1859, the Northern part of New South Wales was given up for the creation of Queensland.
In 1863, a further part of North Western New South Wales was given up to South Australia and called the Northern Territory of South Australia.
