It appears that most people in Australia would prefer to keep the Monarchy, than change to a Republic.
The current Queen of Australia is Elizabeth II. She has reigned as the Australian monarch since 6 February 1952.
In a poll done in January 2021, these figures came out:
Should Australia become a republic?
- 40 out of every 100 think that Australia should stay a Monarchy.
- 34 out of every 100 think that Australia should become a republic at some stage.
- 26 were not sure
Out of those 34, that think that Australia should become a republic at some stage;
- 21 think this should happen NOW, and remove the Queen as Head of State.
- 11 think this should happen AFTER the Queen is no longer reigning.
- 2 were not sure.
Result:
More people prefer Australia to stay as a Monarchy, then become a republic.
Australian born -v- Non Australian born views.
33% of Australian born say Australia should become a republic.
38% of Non-Australian born say Australia should become a republic.
41% of Australian born say Australia should stay a Monarchy.
37% of Non-Australian born say Australia should stay a Monarchy.
26% of Australian born were not sure.
25% of Non-Australian born were not sure.
Result:
More Australian born residents value the Monarchy, than overseas born immigrants do.
More Overseas overseas born immigrants would prefer a Republic.

- 41% of ages 18 to 24 were not sure.
- 31% of ages 25 to 39 were not sure.
- 26% of ages 40 to 54 were not sure.
- 22% of ages 55 and over were not sure.
Of those that have a Preference.
- 43% of ages 18 to 24 prefer a Republic, compared to 57% who prefer a Monarchy.
- 49% of ages 25 to 39 prefer a Republic, compared to 51% who prefer a Monarchy.
- 46% of ages 40 to 54 prefer a Republic, compared to 54% who prefer a Monarchy.
- 43% of ages 55 and over prefer a Republic, compared to 57% who prefer a Monarchy.
Result:
All these age groups would prefer Australia to stay as a Monarchy, than become a Republic.
The age group 25 to 39 was the only group where the difference was minimal, with just a 2% preference for a Monarchy.
The other age groups prefer a Monarchy by between 8% and 14% majority.
However, there is a large number that are not sure, especially in the younger age group.
