IELTS Bands for an Australian Visa

IELTS Score Required for an Australian Visa?

Some Australian visa applicants need to meet a required English language level to be eligible to apply for a visa.

These visa groups include; student visas, skilled visas and some permanent visas.

At the moment these do NOT include Partner Visa applications, although this is due to change, probably by the end of 2021, where a level of Functional English may be required before the final Permanent Visa (801 or 100) can be granted. The English level for Partner visas is not required at time of application.

Functional English
If your visa application requires you to show you have Functional English, you need to have an average IELTS score of at least 4.5 based on the 4 test components.

Vocational English
If your visa application requires you to show you have Vocational English, you need to have at least an IELTS score of 5.0 in each of the four test components (speaking, reading, listening and writing).

Competent English
If your visa application requires you to show you have Competent English, you need to have at least an IELTS score of 6.0 in each of the four test components (speaking, reading, listening and writing).

Proficient English
If your visa application requires you to show you have Proficient English, you need to have at least an IELTS score of 7.0 in each of the four test components (speaking, reading, listening and writing).

Superior English
If your visa application requires you to show you have Superior English, you need to have at least an IELTS score of 8.0 in each of the four test components (speaking, reading, listening and writing).

On the above wording, a score of:
4.5 for speaking, 8 for reading, 8 for listening and 8 for writing, would only give Functional English.

An increase in speaking, to band 5, would change the result to Vocational English.
