Parents will be Immediate Family.
The immigration definition of ‘immediate family’ is to be expanded to include the parents of Australian residents and citizens.
From 1 November 2021, the definition of ‘immediate family member’ will include the parents of adult Australian citizens and permanent residents. This is for the purpose of assessing exemptions to Australia’s travel restrictions only.
The definition of parents of Australian citizens and permanent residents includes:
- biological parents
- legal (including adoptive) parents
- step-parents
- parents in-law.
Before you can travel, you will need to have your relationship with your adult Australian child confirmed by submitting a travel exemption request.

National Security Committee earlier this week, where we considered these matters on Tuesday, (12 Oct 2021) we also agreed that we would be looking at expanding the definition of ‘immediate family’ to include the parents of Australian residents and citizens, and I know that will be very welcome
in New South Wales’ case, that means that those family members will be able to come into Sydney if they are vaccinated and not have to quarantine.
