1998 Australian Federal Election Final Result.
The Australian 1998 Federal Election was held on 3rd October 1998.
The Voting Split was:
- 50.98 % – Australian Labor Party 5,630,409
- 49.02 % – Liberal/Nationals 5,413,431
- THE WINNER was Liberal/Nationals…
There were 12,154,050 eligible voters on the day, and 11,545,201 (or 94.99%) of them voted.
Voting is compulsory in Australia, and those without a valid reason to not vote would have received a fine for not voting.
Only 11,109,063 of the votes were considered valid, with 436,138 of the votes deemed inadmissible for various reasons.
Some voters, who do not wish to vote, but do not want to pay the fine for not voting, attend the voting poll, but spoil their ballot paper in one of various ways, to purposefully register a vote that does not count.
The Liberal/National Party coalition won the 1998 election, with John Howard being re-elected as the next Prime Minister of Australia.
The actual final voting allocation, after preferences were transferred under the Australian two party preference voting system was:
- 50.98 % – Australian Labor Party 5,630,409
- 49.02 % – Liberal/Nationals 5,413,431
However, the numbers of Seats gained by each party were:
- 79 – Liberal National Party (53.02% of seats)
- 67 – Australian Labor Party (44.97% of seats)
- 3 – Independents (2.01% of seats)
This gave control of Parliament to the Liberal National Party, even without a majority vote. A similar situation happened some years previously but with a Liberal National majority, but with the Australian Labor Party gaining control through the numbers of seats gained.
The following percentages relate to the votes initially allocated to each party after counting was completed.
