A moped is defined as a motorbike with a motor of 50 cc or 50 millilitres (ml) capacity or less and with a manufacturers top rated speed of 50 kilometres per hour (km/h).
New South Wales
In New South Wales moped riders must hold a riders licence.
Queensland
A car or motorbike licence is required to ride a moped on roads or road-related areas. If you are riding a moped on a car licence you must not carry a passenger.
Mopeds are not allowed on Freeways in QLD.
The QLD driver licence will show only the highest class or classes of vehicle that you are authorised to drive. An example of this is the standard class C car licence, which allows the holder to drive the following:
- a moped
- a motor vehicle weighing 4.5 t GVM or less, built or fitted to carry a maximum of 12 passengers including the driver, with or without a trailer weighing 9 t GVM or less
- a specially constructed vehicle weighing 4.5 t GVM or less, with or without a trailer
South Australia
In South Australia, holders of full driver’s licences may ride mopeds.
The holder of any class of South Australian driver’s licence can ride a moped as long as the moped is registered, insured and compliant with Australian design rules.

In Victoria moped riders must meet the same age and skill requirements as motorcycle riders.
Western Australia
Western Australia has a special moped driving licence available to 16-year-olds. Seventeen-year-olds can get car licences which automatically entitle them to ride mopeds.
If you already hold any class of WA driver’s licence (other than a learner’s permit), this automatically covers you to ride a moped.
