An Electric Car for A$21,000?

Aion UT EV about 100,000 yuan (A$21,000)

The Chinese GAC Aion UT is estimated to be priced from about 100,000 yuan (A$21,000) in its home market.

The Aion UT has a single permanent magnet synchronous e-motor with a peak power of 100 kW (134 hp). It adopts LFP batteries with a range of around 600 km.

It’s unlikely to be that affordable in Australia, given the cost of shipping and homologating the vehicle locally – plus the additional features expected as standard in Australia, such as a suite of the latest crash-avoidance safety systems, which may not be standard in China.

A price comparison can be seen in the BYD Dolphin which starts at 99,800 yuan (about $A21,000) in China. It’s starting price in Australia is A$38,890 plus on-road costs.

The A$21,000 price sounded good, but the excitement disappeared once the full story was revealed.
