The Queensland State Budget is delivered every June.
Queensland Treasury prepares the Queensland Budget for the state government every financial year, outlining the government’s revenue and expenses for the coming year.
- Queensland State Budget 2017-18, was delivered on Tuesday 13 June 2017 to cover July 2017 to June 2018.
- Queensland State Budget 2018-19, was delivered on Tuesday 12 June 2018 to cover July 2018 to June 2019.
- Queensland State Budget 2019-20, was delivered on Tuesday 11 June 2019 to cover July 2019 to June 2020.
The Queensland State Budget 2020-21 has not yet been delivered. It is now October 2020, the fourth month of the period it covers.
The Queensland Labor government has stated that if Labor wins the State election on 31 October 2020, it will release its budget for 2020-21 in November 2020.
Is this politics at play?
If LNP win, then the LNP party will have to deliver a budget half-way through the year.
Most States deliver their annual budget just before the end of the Financial year, in May or June, in most normal years.
Victoria State Budget 2020-21
The Victoria 2019-20 State Budget was delivered on Monday 27 May 2019.
Due to COVID-19, the 2020-21 Victorian State Budget has been deferred until later this year. This is in line will all other Australian jurisdictions and unanimously agreed at National Cabinet in April. A new date is yet to be determined.
NSW State Budget 2020-21
The NSW 2019-20 State Budget was released on Tuesday 18 June, 2019.
Due to COVID-19, the 2020-21 NSW state Budget was postponed to 17 November 2020
WA State Budget 2020-21
The 2020-21 State Budget was due to be handed down on May 14.
Due to COVID-19, the 2020-21 Western Australian State Budget was postponed to Thursday, 8 October 2020.
It is unfortunate that in Queensland the election will be before the Budget, but it is not alone in this.
ACT State Budget 2020-21
The same situation applies in the ACT, where their 2020-21 Budget is delayed until after the election, which is on Saturday, 17 October 2020.
