Aged Care Deaths in Australia.
Almost 245,000 older people died in Australia between July 2012 and June 2014.
The majority of these, 80%, (an average of 265 per day), had used an aged care program before their death.
The leading causes of these deaths were coronary heart disease (14%), dementia (11%) and cerebrovascular disease (8.7%).
Residential Aged Care Deaths.
44% (abt 107,800) of these died while in permanent residential aged care (PRAC).
That figure of 107,800 is about 147 per day, spread over the 2 year period.
Community Aged Care Deaths.
29% (abt 71,000) died while in Home and Community Care (HACC), aged care packages.
That figure of 71,000 is about 97 per day, spread over the 2 year period.
Comparison to 2020-21.
During the COVID-19 Pandemic, many of these normal deaths might be reported as deaths with Covid-19.
