Eligibility for the Australian Aged Pension.
The Aged Pension is an Income support for older Australians, it is not something that everyone gets. It is only for those in Financial Need.
Most Australians reaching retirement age will be eligible for a Superannuation from their Employment, under the Compulsory Super Plan. This income may make them ineligible for the Aged Pension under the Income and Assets test.
To be eligible for the Aged Pension you need to fit the various Eligibility Requirements, these include:
- Age Requirement
- Residence Requirement
- Income test
- Assets test
Pension Rates are reduced where the recipient receives other income.
A single person would lose 50 cents for each dollar (50%) over $174 of other income per fortnight.
A member of a couple would lose 50 cents for each dollar (50%) over $308 of other income per fortnight.
Example: A single pensioner receiving $933.40 per fortnight, but also having an additional income of $274 per fortnight (part time work, personal super, etc.) would have their pension reduced by $50 per fortnight, based on this calculation:
-
- $274 less $174 allowed income = $100 over. 50% of $100 = $50 to be deducted from the pension, leaving a net pension of $883.40 ($933.40 minus $50)
More examples:
-
- A single pensioner with additional income of $1,000 per fortnight, would have the pension reduced by $413, leaving $520.40 pension per fortnight. Giving a combined income of $1,520.40 per fortnight.
- A single pensioner with additional income of $2,000 per fortnight, would have the pension reduced by $913, leaving just $20.40 pension per fortnight. Giving a combined income of: $2,020.40 per fortnight.
The Residence Requirement.
To be eligible for the aged pension, you need to be a Australian resident for a total of at least 10 years, with at least five of these years in one period.
Any eligible overseas pension must be applied for, and the rate will be taken into account when calculating the Australian Payment rate.
