What is Citizenship by Descent?
Australian citizenship by descent can be applied for if you were born outside Australia and one (or both) of your parents at the time of your birth was an Australian citizen at that time. ie: You are a descendent of a parent who was an Australian citizen at your birth, even though you were not born in Australia.
April 2021 Citizenship by Descent processing times:
The processing times, from date of application to date of decision, for citizenship by descent applications finalised in the month of April 2021 were:
- 75% were finalised in 7 months or less.
- 15% were finalised between 7 and 9 months after application.
- 10% were finalised in 9 months or more.

There were 1,373 citizenship by descent applications received during April 2021. (That works out at 69 applications per working day).
As at 30 April 2021 there were 5,540 citizenship by descent applications still on hand, in the pipeline.

January 2021 Citizenship by Descent processing times:
The processing times, from date of application to date of decision, for citizenship by descent applications finalised in the month of January 2021 were:
- 75% were finalised in 5 months or less.
- 15% were finalised between 5 and 8 months after application.
- 10% were finalised in 8 months or more.

There were 1,470 citizenship by descent applications received during January 2021. (That works out at 66 applications per working day).
As at 31 January 2021 there were 7,244 citizenship by descent applications still on hand, in the pipeline.
