Average Australian Electricity Bills November 2018

How much is the Average Australian Electric Bill?.

Between $243 and $527 per quarter?

The average bill will obviously vary enormously depending on the household size, but fortunately some of the Electricity providers state the average daily power consumption for households of different sizes.

My last Electricity bill states that the average daily consumptions are:

  • 1 person household uses 8 kWh per day
  • 2 person household uses 12 kWh per day
  • 3 person household uses 14 kWh per day
  • 4 person household uses 17 kWh per day

Using this date we can calculate average quarterly bills from the unit and daily costs shown on recent actual Electricity bills.

Having received Electricity bills from both Origin and Alinta recently, I have done this for the above average daily consumption rates, with each suppliers actual charge rates.

Average Australian Electric Bill.

A 1 person household, using the average of 8 kWh per day, would use 720 kWh in a 90 day billing period:

Agoda Hotel Bookings
Sponsor ai10

This would cost $307.96 with a standard Origin plan
This would cost $243.31 with a standard Alinta (pay on time) plan

This calculates at a kWh unit cost, taking account of the daily supply charge, of $0.43 or $0.34 depending on the provider.

A 2 person household, using the average of 12 kWh per day, would use 1,080 kWh in a 90 day billing period:

This would cost $405.02 with a standard Origin plan
This would cost $315.96 with a standard Alinta (pay on time) plan

This calculates at a kWh unit cost, taking account of the daily supply charge, of $0.38 or $0.29 depending on the provider.

A 3 person household, using the average of 14 kWh per day, would use 1,260 kWh in a 90 day billing period:

This would cost $453.55 with a standard Origin plan
This would cost $352.28 with a standard Alinta (pay on time) plan

This calculates at a kWh unit cost, taking account of the daily supply charge, of $0.36 or $0.28 depending on the provider.

A 4 person household, using the average of 17 kWh per day, would use 1,530 kWh in a 90 day billing period:

This would cost $526.34 with a standard Origin plan
This would cost $406.77 with a standard Alinta (pay on time) plan

This calculates at a kWh unit cost, taking account of the daily supply charge, of $0.34 or $0.27 depending on the provider.

These costs are what I would have personally paid on my last two bills, one from Origin, and one from Alinta, if my energy usage had been at those levels.
