How Much do Bulk Billing Doctors get Paid?
Having just had a 10 minute appointment, I just signed the Medicare authorisation form, and saw that the doctor would receive about $65 for that appointment. I think it was $36.85 plus $28.?? Bulk Billing incentive.
Some GPs might be paid between $82.85 and $122.50 for a consultation over 20 minutes.
Bulk billing doctors are paid directly from Medicare, and could receive two sections of payment for each patient visit.
- The main Medicare benefit value.
- The Bulk Billing Supplement, for children and concession card holders.

A consultation over 20 minutes will give the GP:
- $82.85 Medicare Payment.
- Between $20.65 and $39.65 Bulk Billing Supplement, if applicable.
Bulk Billing Supplement
Bulk billing incentive payments are available to medical practitioners that bulk bill.
GPs in metropolitan areas are paid a A$20.65 bonus if they bulk bill concession card holders or children under 16 years.
GPs in rural and remote areas are paid between $31.35 and $39.65 extra.
Eligible Patients:
- Children under 16 years of age.
- Patients with a Commonwealth concession card. (Over 35 percent of Australians have a concession card.)
