What is an Australian Resident?
That is a simple question, but maybe complex to answer, as there are a few different definitions.
Some say it is a person that is resident in Australia, ie: Living in Australia.
The Australian Tax Office have a definition for Australian Tax Resident, and that covers a wide range of people that spend time in Australia, no matter what their Nationality or visa status.
Centrelink define it as either:
- an Australian citizen
- a permanent residence visa holder
- a protected Special Category visa (SCV) holder.
So; One government department might say that they consider a short term (2 year) working visa holder as Australian Resident, for tax purposes, but another government department would state that the same person is NOT an Australian Resident.
