International Arrivals to Australia May 2020

The latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows a massive drop in international arrivals when compared to the same month last year.

This is,  of course,  due to the COVID-19 coronavirus and the various lockdowns.

Visitor Arrivals.

There were only 3,440 overseas visitors to Australia in May 2020. This is an increase from the 2,200 in April 2020, but down from the 668,280 in May 2019.

Of the overseas arrivals, almost a third of the visitors were from New Zealand – Australia’s largest source country – followed by the United Kingdom and United States.

The leading source countries for visitor arrivals to Australia in May 2020 were:

• New Zealand 1,190 (117,500 in May 2019)
• UK 340 (30,000 in May 2019)
• USA 320 (56,400 in May 2019)
• India 110
• Singapore 100
• China 100 (94,700 in May 2019)
• Hong Kong 80
• Philippines 70
• Japan 70
• United Arab Emirates 60

Returning Residents.

Another 13,380 Australian residents also returned during May 2020, down from the 17,000 in April 2020. Also down from the 866,280 arrivals in May 2019.

• India 2,680 (28,400 in May 2019)
• New Zealand 1,380 (90,200 in May 2019)
• USA 1,080 (95,000 in May 2019)
• UK 1,050 (47,800 in May 2019)
• China 820 (59,600 in May 2019)
• Pakistan 660
• Philippines 330
• Singapore 320
• Thailand 310
• Nepal 250

International students.

40 arrivals to Australia travelled on an international student visa in May 2020. There were 34,220 student visa arrivals in May 2019.
