Mobile Phone Ban Immigration Detention

What exactly is the Ban on Mobile Phones for those in Immigration Detention?

Criminals that are awaiting deportation are allowed to keep mobile phones, and use them,  while in immigration detention.

Currently the Australian Border Force (ABF) does not have the power to confiscate items like mobile phones possessing child exploitation material, extremist content or drugs.

This bill is designed to give the ABF the power to confiscate in cases like those.

It also allows the ABF strengthened powers to search for, and seize, items that put the safety and security of detention staff at risk.

There has been an increase in the numbers of detainees in the detention facilities, following the cancelling of visas under section 501 of the Migration Act.
