How to return to Australia with an expired RRV.
Most people say that a Permanent Resident can only return to Australia if they hold a valid Resident Return Visa (RRV)
That is the intention of the RRV, but some people return on a tourist visa, and assume their “Permanent” residency is still valid.
However, they may eventually be deported as they do not hold a valid visa. They lost their PR status while overseas without an RRV.
According to the following statement from Immigration, people in that position must apply for an RRV again as soon as they arrive back in Australia.
It may not be a straightforward application, and a grant may not be guaranteed.
If you were an Australian permanent visa holder who returned to Australia on a temporary visa (such as an Electronic Travel Authority), you should consider applying for an RRV as soon as possible if you intend to remain permanently in Australia

I have personal knowledge of this situation, having left Australia after 10 years as PR but without an RRV, many years ago, and returned on a visitor visa.
To regain my PR status I had to get an RRV even though I was in Australia again, albeit on a visitor visa status, which in my case involved interviews at an immigration office. I had to prove my links to Australia, which in my case involved my Australian citizen wife attending the interview with me.
