N/A indicates that insufficient visas were finalised to produce meaningful statistics. Probably under 5.

For examples of ACTUAL processing times see the comments section at the end of this post..
If you wish to add YOUR grant times to these pages, please complete our subclass 801 survey here.

It should be noted that the average processing time is often a lot less than the 75% maximum figure quoted.

The average processing time for the 26,095 subclass 801 visas finalised in the 2018/19 year was 438 calendar days (14.4 months).
75% being done in under 593 days (19.5 months).

  2. Hi Guys,

I have applied for 820 in July 2019. Its been 15 months and still awaiting 820 grant. My nationality is Indian.

I want to understand why the processing time is different for different nationalities.

    1. Some countries governments respond faster to the Australian requests for various information about the applicants, such as security issues, verification of information etc.

There can be many other reasons for processing speed, which can also explain why some people from the normally slower countries are approved faster than some from the normally faster countries.

  6. Hi guys, I currently have been waiting for just over 14 monts from the date of eligibility (lodged the 820 in 2017 July and was granted the 801 in May 2019). I just saw today that the global processing time for the 801 has increased from 10-17 months to 13-25. Freaking out a bit as the potential of waiting another year for my PR threw a huge spanner in the works for us. Any words of encouragement? What does this mean for me?

    1. Do not panic too much, although COVID-19 is affecting all visas, and nothing is certain.

However, the current times are not that much different to those before COVID.

      Jul 2020: 13-25 = 75% took under 13 months.

      Before Covid..
      Mar 2020: 13-21 = 75% took under 13 months.
      Feb 2020: 11-22 = 75% took under 11 months.
      Jan 2020: 12-20 = 75% took under 12 months.
      Dec 2019: 12-19 = 75% took under 12 months.

A few applicants, possibly with problematic applications, do take longer than the straightforward applicants, and these may be being affected more than anyone else.

      Jul 2020: 13-25 = 10% took over 25 months.

      Before Covid..
      Mar 2020: 13-21 = 10% took over 21 months.
      Feb 2020: 11-22 = 10% took over 22 months.
      Jan 2020: 12-20 = 10% took over 20 months.
      Dec 2019: 12-19 = 10% took over 19 months.

You say you are at 13 months now, so it may be worth lodging a request using the Partner (Permanent) Processing Centres Enquiry Form. We did that, and asked if they were waiting for anything else from us. The 801 grant came a few weeks later.

To help with our own data collection on processing times, can you also submit your details at our Subclass 820 Visa Processing Time Input Form

and once the 801 is granted, again at: Subclass 801 Visa Processing Time Input Form

A few examples of recent 801 grants:

10 Sep 2020. subclass 801 granted from application eligibility date of 15 Feb 2020. Almost 7 months.

8 Sep 2020. subclass 801 granted from application eligibility date of 28 May 2020. Just over 3 months.

4 Sep 2020. subclass 801 granted from application eligibility date of 15 Jul 2020. Under 2 months.

7 Aug 2020. subclass 801 granted from application eligibility date of 4 May 2020. Just over 3 months.

I need to add a question on that form, to ask if applicants sent the request that I suggested to you. I’ll try to do that now.

  8. Some fast times for the 801. I guess that while the overseas processing is on hold, probably as much as possible to purely to reduce the numbers that can enter Australia and therefore avoid increasing quarantine numbers, there is more time to spend on the onshore processing that doesn’t have the “entry to Australia” issue.
